Imposing in InDesign vs a dedicated imposition tool

InDesign can print a booklet and a script can gang a sheet. Here is where that approach holds up, where it quietly stops, and what you actually give up by staying inside the layout application.

The job arrives as a supplied PDF. Sixty-four pages, someone else's document, no packaged links, no fonts, and the client wants it saddle-stitched by Thursday. You open InDesign out of habit and then remember that InDesign wants an InDesign file. You could place the PDF page by page into a new document, but that is sixty-four placements before you have imposed anything at all.

That moment — supplied PDF, no source document — is the clearest line between what a layout application does and what an imposition tool does. It is not the only line, but it is the one most people hit first.

This post is not an argument that InDesign is bad at imposition. It is very good at a specific and common shape of job, and if that is the shape of your work you should keep using it. The useful question is which jobs sit inside that shape and which ones sit outside it.

What InDesign genuinely does well

Three features cover most of what designers need, and each of them is better than its reputation among people who have never used it.

For a document you authored, in a document you still have open, Print Booklet is the fastest route to a folded dummy that exists. It knows the page count because it owns the pages. It reorders 2-up saddle stitch correctly without you thinking about fold order. Critically, it also has a creep field — you can enter a shingling value and InDesign will pull the inner pages towards the spine for you. That is a real feature and it is worth naming, because it is one of the places where the layout application is ahead.

Where Print Booklet stops is roughly where the word booklet stops. 2-up saddle stitch, 2-up perfect bound, consecutive, and that is the list. It does not gang. It does not repeat. It has no concept of a cut-and-stack pile order.

Page tiling

Tiling in the print dialogue splits an oversized page across several sheets with an overlap. For a large poster proofed onto A3 that is exactly the right tool, and reaching for an imposition application to do it would be silly. Tiling is a one-page-to-many-sheets operation, though, which is the opposite direction from imposition. It does not help you put many pages onto one sheet.

Imposition scripts

The ExtendScript and UXP ecosystem around InDesign is deep, and someone has written a script for most things. If you have a script that ganged your standard six-up postcard layout and it works, it works. Two caveats worth being honest about: scripts break across major application versions and Adobe's move from ExtendScript to UXP has already broken a great many of them; and a script someone else wrote is a black box you now own, at exactly the moment the run is on the press and it has done something unexpected.

Where the layout-app approach stops

Four specific places, in roughly the order that working printers hit them.

Page order beyond a booklet

Booklet order is the only non-consecutive order InDesign knows. If you need cut-and-stack — where sheet 1 carries records 1, 51, 101 and 151 so that the guillotined piles collate in sequence — there is nothing in the application to express that. You are computing the order by hand and building a document to match it. That is the point at which the tool has stopped helping and started being a place to type numbers into.

This matters far more often than it sounds. Numbered tickets, named badges, variable-data cards, anything that comes off a digital press as a stack and then goes through a guillotine — all of it needs stack order, not reading order. Ganging different artworks

Putting four unrelated jobs on one sheet to fill the press means placing four PDFs into a new document and positioning each one. Doable. But the positions are now hand-set coordinates in one specific document, and when the next gang has five jobs on a different stock you start again. Nothing you did the first time carries forward.

Repeatable settings across jobs

This is the quietest cost and the largest one. A layout document holds its imposition as geometry — frames at coordinates. It does not hold it as settings. So when the same client sends the same product next month, you cannot load last month's imposition; you can only open last month's file and hope it is close enough to edit. In a tool where rows, columns, gaps, bleed, mark length and mark distance are named fields, the job is a set of values you can re-enter in under a minute and get a byte-identical sheet.

Imposing a PDF you did not author

Back to the sixty-four-page supplied file. Placing a multi-page PDF into InDesign is possible — a script or the Place command with the import options open — but you have added a round trip, an embedded-versus-linked decision, a transparency flattening question and a re-export before you have imposed anything. A tool that takes a PDF and returns a PDF skips all of it.

Two of these rows favour InDesign outright. A comparison that did not admit that would not be worth reading.

The honest recommendation

Most studios end up using both, and the split falls along a clean line: InDesign owns the artwork, the imposition tool owns the sheet.

  • Stay in InDesign when you authored the document, the job is a straightforward saddle-stitch or perfect-bound booklet, and you need creep compensation applied for you.
  • Reach for an imposition tool when the input is a finished PDF, when the sheet needs a specific ordering, when the same layout will come back, or when marks have to hit a stated distance rather than whatever the document bleed happens to be.
  • Do not build a script for a layout you will run more than twice unless you are prepared to maintain it across application updates. That is a real ongoing cost that never appears in the estimate.

What FastImpose actually does is narrow on purpose: four imposition modes, a set of named controls, crop marks, a slug line, sheet numbering, duplex with a back-flip, and a PDF out. It is not an editor and it will not fix your colour. It runs on your machine, so a client PDF under NDA never leaves it.

Can I keep using Print Booklet and only impose the cover separately?

Yes, and it is a common split. Run the text section through Print Booklet where the creep field earns its keep, then impose the cover as a separate 2-up sheet so you can set the spine allowance and the marks independently. The cover is usually a different stock anyway, so it was going to be a separate press run.

Does an imposition tool replace a full RIP or workflow system?

No. A prepress workflow system does preflight, colour conversion, trapping, ink-coverage checks, PDF/X conformance and job tracking as well as imposition. FastImpose does none of those — it takes a PDF and returns an imposed PDF. If you need preflight and colour management you still need the thing that does preflight and colour management.

My imposition script still works. Is there a reason to change?

Not immediately. The reasons to move are that the next application update may break it, that the person who wrote it may not be reachable, and that a script generally encodes one layout rather than a set of adjustable settings. If your script covers your standard job and you are happy owning it, keep it.

Can InDesign impose a PDF without placing every page manually?

Only via a script or a third-party plug-in — the Place command imports one page at a time unless something automates the loop for you. If supplied PDFs are the majority of your input, that automation is load-bearing infrastructure rather than a convenience, which is worth weighing.

Which one handles creep?

InDesign's Print Booklet has a creep field; FastImpose does not compensate for creep at all. If your booklet is thick enough for creep to matter, either apply the compensation upstream in the layout or trim to allow for it. There is more on how to judge that in the saddle-stitch post.
