Duplex and the 180° back-flip

Two-sided imposition, and the single toggle that decides whether your backs come off the press upright or inverted. Includes the one-sheet test that settles it before you commit a run.

Two settings, one dependency. Duplex is on by default and tells FastImpose to impose the job as two-sided work: every sheet gets a front and a back, and the page order is distributed across both. Flip back 180° is also on by default and rotates the content of each back half a turn. It requires Duplex — set it on a single-sided job and the job is rejected with Flip Back (180°) requires Duplex.

That second toggle causes more reprints than any other setting in imposition, and it does so for a reason that has nothing to do with software: the answer depends on what the machine physically does to the sheet between the first side and the second, and that is not something the file can know.

What the press does to the sheet

A duplexing machine turns the sheet over between sides, and there are only two ways to turn a rectangle over: about its long axis or about its short axis. Which one the machine uses is a property of the machine and, on some devices, a setting.

Neither behaviour is wrong. A wall calendar wants short-edge; a book wants long-edge. The imposition has to agree with whichever one the sheet is actually going to receive, and the 180° flip is how you make it agree.

Why an imposed back often needs the half turn

On an unimposed document the question rarely comes up, because a single page turned about the short axis is still a single page and the reader simply turns the sheet the other way. On an imposed sheet it matters, because the positions on the back have to line up with the positions on the front. If the sheet is flipped about one axis and the imposition assumed the other, position 1 on the back lands over position 2 on the front, or over position 3, or over nothing sensible at all — and every trimmed piece has the wrong reverse.

The half turn is the correction. Rotating the back content 180° maps the top-left position to the bottom-right and back again, which is precisely the transform the short-axis turn applies to the paper. Apply both and they cancel: the paper turns one way, the content turns the other, and everything registers.

This is why the default is on. Most short-run digital duplexing turns the sheet about the short axis, and most imposed work wants the correction. But a default is a guess about the common case, not a statement about your machine.

How a printer driver can cancel your flip

The most confusing failure in this whole area is the double rotation. Your driver almost certainly has its own duplex option, offering something like Flip on long edge and Flip on short edge. That option applies a rotation of its own on top of whatever is in the file.

Two rotations of 180° are no rotation at all. If FastImpose has already flipped the back and the driver flips it again, the backs come out exactly as if you had never turned the setting on — and because the file plainly shows the rotation when you open it, the natural conclusion is that the setting did not work. It worked twice.

The one-sheet test

Do not reason about this. Prove it, with one sheet, before you commit the run. The whole procedure takes two minutes and it is the only thing that settles the question for a particular machine, driver and stock.

  1. Impose the real job

    Use the actual grid, the actual sheet and the actual settings. A test made with a different layout proves nothing about this one.

  2. Print a single sheet, duplexed, from the real queue

    Same driver, same tray, same paper. If the run is going out to a trade printer, ask them which way their machine turns rather than testing on yours.

  3. Mark the leading edge before it goes in

    A pencil cross in one corner of the blank sheet tells you afterwards which edge went into the machine first. Without it you are guessing at what you are looking at.

  4. Turn the printed sheet the way the finished piece will be turned

    For a book-style piece, turn it about the long edge. For a calendar, turn it about the short edge. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that decides the answer.

  5. Check position registration, not just orientation

    Confirm that the back of each position is the right content for that position as well as the right way up. Position mismatch and inversion are different faults with different fixes.

  6. Change exactly one thing and repeat

    If it is wrong, toggle either the flip or the driver option — not both — and print one more sheet. Two variables changed at once is how an afternoon disappears.

Common mistakes

Rotating twice and concluding the setting is broken

Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the most common of all. If turning the flip on changes nothing visible on paper, suspect a second rotation downstream rather than a failed setting. Open the exported PDF and look at the back of sheet 1: if the content is inverted there, FastImpose did its part.

Testing the turn on the wrong axis

An operator holds the sheet up, turns it about whichever edge is nearest their thumb, and declares the backs upside down. The finished piece will be turned about a specific edge determined by the binding, not by the thumb. Establish which edge that is first, then judge.

Setting the flip on a single-sided job

The flip only means something if there is a back to flip, so it is rejected outright without Duplex rather than being quietly ignored. If you meant to run two-sided, turn Duplex on. If you meant single-sided, turn the flip off. See troubleshooting for the full list of validation messages.

Proofing a duplex job single-sided

A single-sided proof of a two-sided imposition tells you the fronts are right and nothing else. Every fault this page describes is invisible until the sheet is printed on both sides and turned. Proof duplexed or do not proof.

Assuming every machine in the shop turns the same way

It is a per-device behaviour. The proof printer and the production press can disagree, and the same press can behave differently from a different tray or with a different media type. A test that passed last month on a different machine is not evidence about this one.

Should I leave the 180° flip on by default?

Yes, until your own one-sheet test says otherwise for a particular machine. On is the correct setting for the most common case — short-axis duplexing of book-style work — which is why it ships that way. Record the answer for each machine somewhere the whole shop can see it.

Does the flip affect crop marks, the slug line or sheet numbers?

Marks are drawn against the sheet, so they stay where the knife needs them on both sides. Sheet numbering has its own face setting, which defaults to Front — decide deliberately which side you want the number on. See slug line and sheet numbering.

Does Booklet mode need the flip too?

Yes, and for the same reason: the back of each folded sheet has to land the right way up relative to its front, or half the pages in the section are inverted after folding. Fold the test sheet rather than just turning it. See Booklet imposition.

My backs are on the wrong positions rather than upside down. Is that the same fault?

No, and the distinction matters. Inverted content is an orientation problem and the flip is the fix. Content on the wrong position is usually the sheet being turned about the axis your imposition did not assume, so the whole grid mirrors. Check orientation and position separately when you inspect the test sheet.

Can I run a job with Duplex off?

Yes. Turn Duplex off for single-sided work and the whole question disappears, along with the flip setting, which cannot be used on its own. Single-sided is a perfectly ordinary configuration for labels, tickets and any piece with a blank reverse.
